reflection this week

What is the future of video and web? No one can tell. The battle between distributors and content creators starts long ago. Right now, Netflix is willing to pay $100,000 per episode. Does it necessarily mean that content creators win the battle? However, if the distributors monopoly the market, what will happen? Besides that, the convenient access to various content online may stimulate the surge of amateur creations, which are also another big competition for professional content creators today. If the distributors are limited and content are unlimited, which is for sure in this web 2.0 era, is that necessarily leading to the devaluation of content creation? That is a tricky and disturbing question.

DRM– digital right management.

In this technology flood era, platform and technology is still as important as before? Maybe not, what matters is business model and your idea. Content is the kind. This is a very popular bible in PR field in China.

In the country who doesn’t care about digital rights and patents like China, some companies start to buy patents of video shows from western country and monopoly the online streaming. Content, again, assist in the championship.

Lecture #6

Online video is taking off, which is not only shown in the abundance of video produced and published online, bu also in the ongoing increases of video search traffic. “25% of the search traffic is now on YouTube search traffic. (looking for video)” This, no one can disagree, is a giant number that no one can ignore. Therefore, video or online video is attracting more and more marketers’ and communicators’ eyes.

However, publishing or shooting a video is not the most important issue anymore in this era. What matters is not the act of distribution, but the act of consumption. In the previous age, distribution is the king. While nowadays, we wants more attention or consumption. We chase retweets and share links.

As there are so many diverse platforms and technologies going on. Different tools and different channels can present totally different experience for audience even with the same story. And these different experiences for audience matter, if you want to draw more traffic.

VLOG #3: FUTURE ABOUT MAINSTREAM MEDIA ON WEB

Why We Tell Stories?

Today’s guest speaker Rick brings in a topic, which I find quite fascinating, that we need to tell stories or myths. Some of his ideas is very compelling, especially about why we need to tell stories. And Rick said ” Facts don’t make a people.”.

Fact, compared to stories, are boring and vague. However, stories can be interesting and convincing, especially when we come to some complicated questions or issues in our life. There is always demand in this world for stories. The victories, the conquerors and the people with power needs it to convince its people that they are leading them toward happiness and justify their unrighteousness. The media needs it to sell their paper and the ordinary people lives it to move on.

I grew up in China and there are plenty of moving or righteous stories about community party and its leaders. And when I went to college, my teachers are liberalists and  tells a lot of stories about democracy. I am not going to say who is right or wrong. But story or myth is really a effective way to convince people and advertise your ideas. And the facts are usually concealed by this fantasy.
